Fr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa Custos of the Holy Land wrote a letter in an unprecedented appeal to the President of the State of Israel Shimon Peres, after acts of sabotage in the capital city of Jerusalem, with a call for an end to this phenomenon that crossed the red line.
The attacks on churches in Jerusalem have resulted in an unprecedented appeal by senior official in the Catholic Church to President Peres, to intervene in stopping these acts of sabotage against the churches in the capital.
It was in the past two weeks there has been attacks against two churches in West Jerusalem, where there sprayings on the walls of a monastery & a Baptist Church in the center of Jerusalem depicting the Christian writings, and vandalized cars close to the place. After these events, the Holy Land Custos decided to go with a request for the intervention of President Peres to stop these acts of sabotage, with a note that the churches were targeted are not Catholic.
He wrote:"in these events, and according to my knowledge, not anyone was arrested, but led to a series of painful right of Christians where the assailants attacked the churches almost without resistance." He also wrote "The Christian community lives quietly and humbly in Israel with relations of respect and admiration to the Jews and the Muslims neighbors ... and unfortunately over the years we learned to ignore the provocation."
He also wrote "This time of these acts of sabotage crossed over the red lines and must not pass over." And ended his letter to Peres: "I appreciate you to use your name and your weight esteemed in this issue and in working with the various bodies responsible for the elimination of this dangerous phenomenon."
