AT Yonah hill in Ashdod where it assumed was the place prophet Jonah's tomb; a section of an old building was discovered that confirms the existence of a residential area dating back to the First Temple period.
The discovery of these walls that are more than a meter in width, which dates back to the end of eighth, and the beginning of the ninth century BC.
The Foundation "Atra Kasesha " a Jewish religious organization, which works to maintain the graves of Jews, has announced ten years ago as a Yonah hill as the location where is the tomb of the Prophet Jonah. The Antiquities foundation in Israel has done some excavation work before converting the Hill to a touristic area in the city.
Demitry Yejurov, director of the Israeli Antiquities foundation, estimates that the walls were the basis for the construction of huge building.
Saar Janor, an archaeologist mentioned that the hill rises 50 meters above the sea level which is the highest part of Ashdod, overlooking several areas, including the Mediterranean Sea.
Janor assumes that this discovery reveals that it was a strategic location and demonstrates strong fortress watching the area in the First Temple period.
