A dramatic increase in persecution against Christians is taking place in Mosul.

According to sources with Open Doors, Christians were targeted and some murdered last week in Mosul, Iraq. Reports say Kurdish and Arab security forces were looking on as several were killed in front of the last checkpoint before leaving the town in northern Iraq.

Paul Estabrooks with Open Doors says more violence is expected with elections set for next month.

"...Christians must be perceived as being on one side of an issue opposite those who are the terrorists, so they're obviously are out to target them because they don't want them to influence...these elections that are coming up," he explains. "And it seems to be -- at the moment, at least -- the only seeming connection has to do with the political campaign going on in the country right now."

Two years ago, a targeted campaign by terrorists claimed the lives of 40 Christians and forced 10,000 believers to flee their homes in the area of Mosul.
